CHAPTER 4 & CHAPTER 5

 CHAPTER 4: TIME MANAGEMENT &
ORGANIZATIONAL SKILLS

Time management is super important especially to university's students! And to achieve that, there's multiple ways to step up your time management skills.

Five strategies to develop a successful system of study:

1. Use a weekly timetable.
2. Make use of a daily schedule
3. Use a semester schedule
4. Balance academic with social, and personal responsibilities
5. Avoid putting things off.

From my perspective, the last strategy is a bit challenging to implement as students are well-known to procrastinate until the very last minute. But if we really want to achieve our goal, we have to change that mindset.👍

Why did people procrastinate?

1. A perfectionist
2. Excessive planning
3. Unclear goals.
4. Not making a plan in advance
5. Not knowing what to do
6. Laziness

How to overcome being a 'successful' procrastinator?

1. Break tasks into manageable steps.
2. Commit to a tiny first step.
3. Give yourself permission to make mistakes.
4. Make it easier to decide.
5. Make it easier to do things.
6. Make tasks more enjoyable.

For this chapter, we need to make fixed commitment calendar as our first task. Here's mine:

Hours available for study: 29 hours
Hours needed for study: 39 hours
(I only counted "Study" column as my study hours but I also do revision before/after class 😀)

The second task is to make job task analysis and prioritized to-do list!

CHAPTER 5: MEMORY, LEARNING &
IMPROVING CONCENTRATION

The term "learning pyramid" refers to a group of well-known learning models and representations that relate varying levels of memory brought on by various types of learning. To learn, retain, and use the information, we must comprehend how it is gained as well as the advantages and disadvantages of using various active learning techniques.

For this chapter, we have 4 tasks to do, which are:

1. Memories strategies
2. Organizational strategies
3. Concentration strategies
4. Concentration chart

From the task above, I only got 5 out of 10. It means that I need to improve my memory strategies.

How forgetting could occur? 😕

1. Didn't focus on the information
2. Did not comprehend the information
3. Cramming (last minute study)
4. Had ineffective strategies
5. Interference (taking two tests on the same day, particularly if the subjects are related)
6. Test anxiety (self-deprecating thoughts, lack test preparation)

However, there are ways to improve our our memory strategies!

1. Break reading material down for some period of time
2. Repeat the information few times
3. Elaboration strategies (acronyms, imagery)
4. Organizational strategies

While we're talking about organizational strategies, here's a task that I did:

Based on the task above, it is meant to test our organizational strategies in 60 seconds for each activity.

For the first activity, I managed to remember 7 out of 12 words; train, chalk, crayon, automobile, pencil, book and bus. For the second activity, I did better than the first one. I got 11 out of 12 words. The only word I missed was pen.

Grouping the words under the same heading really helped me in memorizing them!

Next, the third task is concentration strategies:

From the task above, I got 4 out of 10, indicating that I need some help to improve my concentration.

What are some causes of poor concentration?

1. Lack of interest, motivation and /or attention
2. Distraction from others
3. Uncomfortable environment
